What Games and Literature Can Learn From One Another

Together with several of our members, we headed to the Frankfurt Book Fair. It was a day dedicated entirely to stories, ideas, and creative worlds, one that clearly demonstrated the numerous touchpoints that already exist between games and books.

In addition to exploring the impressive fairgrounds, we focused specifically on questions regarding gamification and storytelling. What potential is unlocked when these two creative disciplines meet? And how can games and literature benefit from each other, whether through narratives, world-building, or new forms of interaction?

particular highlight was the presentation “The Game of Licensing,” which offered exciting insights into the existing interfaces between the gaming and book markets. Afterward, we took part in a guided tour organized by the Börsenverein (the German Publishers and Booksellers Association), which, with its history spanning over 200 years, provided a unique perspective on the world of books and its evolution.

The day proved once again that there are still many bridges to be built between games and literature. There is no shortage of ideas; now, it is a matter of developing them further together.
